A 40-year-old man, Friday Anyim, who killed his father's wife in Enugu, has blamed the act on hemp, which he smoked regularly.
The incident occurred on December 27 in Umuenem Ezinesi Oduma, a community in the Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.
It was gathered that the deceased, Bernadette, was one of the three wives of Friday's father, Mr. Ogbonna Anyim.Friday, a secondary school dropout, is the son of Ogbonna's first wife, while the deceased, Bernadette, was the second wife.

It was gathered that on the fateful day, Friday was engaged in a heated quarrel with one of his sisters, named Abigail, over his intention to sell a water tank that belonged to the family.
Friday wanted to use the proceeds of the planned transaction to purchase a motorcycle, which he intended to use to operate as a commercial motorcyclist.
The matter was said to have taken an ugly turn when Friday suddenly picked up an axe, and attempted to use the weapon on his sister.
It was learnt that at the same moment, his stepmother, Bernadette, moved to separate Friday and Abigail.However, the axe, which Friday swung at his sister, landed on Bernadette's neck.
Bernadette collapsed and became unconscious.Friday immediately dropped the axe and took to his heels.
Ogbonna said he received news of the unfortunate development in his household while he was at a village meeting.
He said he rushed home as Bernadette was being taken to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
He said. 
"I am in pains and I don't know how to approach this, but I believe that the law will take its course."
Friday, who was later arrested by the police, expressed regrets over the incident.
He blamed his actions on hemp.
He said, 
"I wanted to hit my elder sister, Abigail, with the axe when it mistakenly landed on my stepmother. I acted in anger; I plead for forgiveness. I also advise youths to abstain from taking hemp and other dangerous drugs and avoid anything that can lead them to kill fellow human beings."

Next Big Future: Taiwan would need 200 or more fifth generation fighter jets for a credible deterrence by 2017-2019

New advances by China on its J-20 stealth fighter diminishes deterrence across the Taiwan Strait, a leading weapons expert in the US said.

"It is crucial that Washington begins to consider Taiwan's next-generation requirements for air defense," International Assessment and Strategy Center (IASC) senior fellow Rick Fisher said.

"Given over a decade's worth of global technology advances, intensive investment and competent program management, it should come as no surprise that China will be the second nation in the world to start production of stealth fighters," it said.

"The J-20 will give the People's Liberation Army Air Force a technological advantage over every other Asian air force. While the J-20 may not be able to supercruise [fly at supersonic speeds without using fuel-thirsty afterburners] with its current Russian AL-31 turbofan engines, its high level of strength, long range and electronic warfare capabilities will make it a very formidable foe for other fighters," it said.

A killer has complained from jail that he will be deported to Nigeria, though he has never been to Africa.
Junior Bayode was 16 when he took part in the mob stabbing of Sofyen Belamouadden , 15, and was given 11 years for manslaughter in 2013.

Bayode, now 22, blasted jail chiefs over the decision to deport him when he is due to be freed in 2019.
His mother is from Nigeria but he was born in Germany and came to the UK aged nine months.

He wrote to prisoners' paper Inside Time from Moorland jail in Doncaster that he is "struggling to understand" why he is being deported. He added: "I may not have been born here but all I know is the British way of life.

Mr Belamouadden teen was chased by a gang of around 20 youths from a rival school and stabbed nine times in just 12 seconds in front of shocked commuters in Victoria Underground Station in central London in the attack two years ago. Five trials took place at the Old Bailey with 17 convictions resulting.

Bayode said the Home Office's "deport first, appeal later" policy was designed to hit migration targets "regardless of human rights".
He added: "I have neither travelled nor been to any other country since I arrived in the UK over 20 years ago.
"My past, my present and my future is firmly rooted in British soil, hence why I am struggling to understand why I have been served with a deportation order to a country I have never been to - Nigeria.
"I was distraught when I read on the order that I can only appeal after my deportation."

Police in Northern California say they have arrested a man accused of armed robbery thanks to a Snapchat selfie he took with one of the victims.
KNTV reports that Pacific Grove police arrested 18-year-old Victor Almanza-Martinez, of Castroville, and that they continue to search for two other suspects believed to have participated in an armed robbery.

Police say that Almanza-Martinez and the two others approached four victims Wednesday at Lover Point Park and allegedly robbed them of their belongings, including a car.

The suspects fled in the stolen car, which is still missing, but before leaving Almanza-Martinez and a female victim exchanged Snapchat information and posed for a selfie together.

Police say the selfie helped them track down Almanza-Martinez. He has been charged with armed robbery and kidnapping and is being held at the Monterey County Jail.

Kiss Daniel whom according to his fans should have won the Next Rated award wrote an open letter to his fans to express his gratitude for their faith in him. He wtote:
"When I opened my social media accounts this morning, it was humbling for me to see that so many people believe that I deserve recognition for the work I was able to do last year by the grace of God. But like Thomas a Kempis famously wrote; "Man proposes, but God disposes".
To see that fans across different social audiences appreciate the efforts I put into making my music is one I will never look down upon, no award beats that, and I hope to be able to repay this confidence in good time.
My fans have been the most amazing source of inspiration for me, and I promise never to let you down. From the days when I was nobody in this industry, to song after song that you have helped become hits, I say God bless you for all the support.
To be honest, it was quite heartbreaking to find out that I did not get the particular recognition I so much craved, but I am excited that it only means I need to work harder, and that 2016 will be a bigger year for me.
In 2015, some of the awards I won with your support include; 'Best New Act' at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA), Next Rated Artiste of The Year at the Extreme Awards in Benin Republic, AFRIMA Awards Most Promising Act in Africa.
I also found out I was one of the top 5 Google Top Trending Nigerian Musicians. For an artiste with less than 10 songs to my name, I think this is enough for me to congratulate myself upon.
This year 2016 is going to be bigger and better; my debut album drops this year, and with the work put into it by myself, my team, and that of the artistes magnanimous enough to feature on it, I am positive that this will be the year.
I also want to use this opportunity to tell the fans to look out for the forthcoming single of my label mate and brother "Sugarboy" dropping in few days from now, as we at G-Worldwide Entertainment will continue to bring you good music.
I thank you all; my fans for always supporting me, the media platforms who continue to keep me in the public's mind, the industry seniors who have made it their job to guide and mentor, and the members of my team who work behind the scenes to make sure I keep my head level and continue to make great music. As feared, FC Barcelona's scoreless draw at Cornellà-El Prat on Saturday versus Espanyol allowed Atlético de Madrid to take over the top spot during Week 18 in La Liga. Barça and Atlético had been even on points, with the Catalans in first on goal differential, but this weekend's results had deep repercussions for both teams.

Atlético faced Levante at home on Saturday night and appeared headed to duplicate Barça's scoreless draw from earlier in the day, when the game reached the final ten minutes in the throes of a stalemate. But Thomas Partey, who had come on for Jackson Martínez, scored the game's lone goal just nine minutes from time to hand the three points to the Colchoneros and sole possession of first place.

Real Madrid went on the road on to Valencia on Sunday night knowing that a victory would draw them even with FC Barcelona, but they twice coughed up single-goal leads and were lucky to salvage a draw that gives them a single point and keeps them in third place. Karim Benzema put the Madrileños up after 16 minutes but Dani Parejo drew Valencia level from the penalty spot with the first half about to expire. Madrid's Mateo Kovačić was sent off in the 68th for a dangerous slide tackle, putting them a man-down for the home stretch. Gareth Bale scored on a brilliant header on a corner kick to put Madrid ahead with only eight minutes left, but Paco Alcácer answered back immediately with a header of his own. Álvaro Negredo was stoned by Keylor Navas on a breakaway in the waning moments, as the All Whites ended up feeling lucky to walk out of the Mestalla with a point under their belts.

FC Barcelona's next La Liga opponents, Granada, won for just the second time at home this season with a 2–1 triumph over visiting Sevilla. Isaac Success and Adalberto Peñaranda put Granada up 2–0 with goals on 17 and 37 minutes, respectively, while Sevilla were able to claw one back in first half injury time when Vitolo stuffed home a rebound following a shot by Kevin Gameiro.

Quartz: Look for oil prices to spike if hostility between Iran and Saudi Arabia gets worse

If friction between Saudi Arabia and Iran persists, in addition to attacks on targets such as embassies, look for oil's first move of the new year to be a spike.

A furor has erupted in both countries, and across the region, in the aftermath of Saudi Arabia's execution Jan. 2 of Nimr al-Nimr, an influential Shia cleric who had denounced discrimination against Saudi's Shia minority. An Iranian mob ransacked the Saudi Embassy in Tehran, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei forecast that God would smite Saudi Arabia.

Angry rhetoric and demonstrations across the region probably won't move oil prices: oil traders would likely take these, more or less, in their stride. The price of international benchmark Brent crude plunged by 35% last year, ending the year at $37.28 a barrel. Most analysts expect the price to remain more or less there through most of this year—perhaps falling to $20, perhaps rising to $45—before rising higher at the end of 2016.

Zero Hedge: It's On: Saudi Arabia Severs Diplomatic Ties With Iran, "Does Not Care" If It Has Angered White House

Earlier today, as Iranian police struggled to disperse protesters gathered outside the Saudi consulate in Mashhad, we said the following about the rapidly deteriorating situation:

If crude needed an excuse to rally, then surely this is it as it now appears that in addition to the fact that Riyadh and Tehran are squaring off in Syria (where Iran is present and the Saudis fight by proxy) and Yemen (where the Saudis are present and the Iranians fight by proxy), the two countries are on the verge of a historic diplomatic crisis which has the potential to stoke sectarian violence across the Muslim world.

Well sure enough, just hours later, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Ahmad Al-Jubeir announced that Riyadh has cut diplomatic ties with Tehran. The Saudis have demanded the Iran mission leave the country within 48 hours.

Jubeir said the attack in Tehran was in line with what he said were earlier Iranian assaults on foreign embassies there and with Iranian policies of destabilizing the region by creating "terrorist cells" in Saudi Arabia.
