Change-A-Life Nigeria Foundation will on Friday, January 1 kick off the New Year with its special annual talk show hosted by Funmi Iyanda on NTA with Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and Chairman, Board of Directors, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, as Special Guests.

Through segmented spotlights on peculiar human stories and hard talk bordering on security, poverty, education, governance and empowerment, Change-A-Life addresses matters at the core of human behaviours in Nigeria and the world in general.

As is tradition since the first edition in 2002, Change-A-Life continues to foster hope on the nation through moments of opportunities and good cheer evoked on the show, as well as the continuous celebration of heroes who inspire others.

The show will be broadcast live on NTA Network and DSTV channel 251 from 9am to 10am on New Year Day. Members of the public interested in joining the studio audience are invited to send an email to abiodun@changealifenigeria.org.

Former West Ham goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek dies at the age of 47

Former Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek has died at the age of 47. Srnicek suffered a cardiac arrest in Czech Republic while running on Dec. 20th and has been in coma since then. His life support was pulled off yesterday after his family gave the go-ahead.

Srnicek played for Newcastle between 1991 and 1998, helping them win promotion to the top flight during the 1992-93 season. He returned to the club on a season-long deal in September 2006 as cover for the injured Shay Given. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

The wheel barrow pusher was walking behind the woman and couldn't control his speed, so he hit the woman and the food she was carrying poured to the ground. Trust Nigerian garage boys, as some were sympathizing with her, some were packing the food. Lol. This happened about 8:10 this morning in Ketu Garage, Lagos ..

Fake Colonel Arrested Over N40m Fraud (Pictured)

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 62-year-old Babatunde Idris for parading himself as a colonel in the Nigerian Army and using a fake identity to defraud one Yinusa Mustapha of the sum of N40m.

The state Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said Idris was arrested after a petition was filed against him.

He said, "Following a petition received alleging the fraudulent activities of Idris, the command's Anti-kidnapping Squad swung into action and arrested the suspect, who until his arrest had fraudulently obtained various sums of money from his victims."

Oyebade added that the suspect promised his last victim, Mustapha, that he would help him to get a certificate for oil importation since 2012, but failed to complete the deal after the money was paid into his account.

"The suspect forged various letterheads of the Nigerian Army which he issued to unsuspecting individuals and corporate organisations soliciting assistance. He also had multiple identities under fake names all bearing the status of a colonel," the commissioner added.

The suspect said he collected the money from his victim in installments, but denied that the money was up to N40m.

He said, "I collected N16m from him claiming to be a colonel in the army. I signed the form, but truly I am not a military man. One of my brothers is a general in the army. One day, he gave me a letter to help somebody, so I made a copy of it.

"Mustapha wanted me to help him to collect certificate of oil lifting and because I knew people who could do it, I took the money from him, but the deal failed."

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima yesterday held a meeting with members of youth volunteers involved in counter insurgency operations popularly known as 'Civilian JTF' over the recent attacks by the sect group in the state. At the meeting which held at the Multipurpose hall of the Government House in Maiduguri, Shettima appreciated the efforts of the civilian force group and unveiled welfare packages for them.

He said despite its meager resource, the Borno state Government would expend whatever it takes to ensure that the volunteers were properly paid allowances, equipped and highly motivated.

He announced a bonus of twenty million naira to the volunteers while directing that any backlog of allowances be paid immediately. Shettima directed the Ministry of Health to put a system in place that would guarantee free medical attention to all youth volunteers in all public hospitals in the state. He also ordered the supply of more patrol vehicles to the volunteers.

"We are all eternally indebted to you and we thank you most sincerely for the sacrifices you have made for us to have peace in this part of the world. I want to assure you that once the dust settles down, once this madness is over, we have the herculean task of creating jobs, of engaging the multitude of youths who stood firm and ensure that we have peace in this part of the world" he said.

A woman believed to be the mother of Mr Batram Igbe, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, has been kidnapped. Madam Rebecca Igbe was said to have been kidnapped from her community in Omuse, Elele Alimini, in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, Monday night.

According to reports, the unidentified gunmen stormed the community around 9pm and shot sporadically in the air to scare people away before abducting Madam Rebecca Igbe who was in a shop opposite her house. The 80-year old begged not to be taken away, but they ignored her and whisked her away. Residents say it's the second time this year that kidnappers will be visiting the elderly woman. According to them, she was also kidnapped earlier this year.

33 year old Mark Salling who plays Noah 'Puck' Puckerman in the hit FOX series Glee was arrested by LA Police on Tuesday morning after police raided his home in Sunland, California after they got a tip off from his ex-girlfriend. Cops searched the 33-year-old's computer and say they found more than a thousand indecent images of child sexual exploitation. The children found on his computer were said to be less than 16 years old...

He posted bail of about $20,000 later on the same day. Possession of more than 600 images can carry a punishment of up to five years in prison. His court date has been set for January 22.

According to CrimeWatchDaily who first reported the story, Salling didn't let police into his house at first, so they had to resort to use of battering rams before they could get into the house.

His computer and other electronic devices were reportedly seized by cops after Salling refused telling them his password.

Tuesday's arrest was not the star's first brush with the law. In March it's believed he reached a $2.7million settlement with a woman who had sued him for sexual battery. Salling shot to fame playing Noah 'Puck' Puckerman in the hit FOX series Glee. He first appeared in 2008 and was a regular until season five.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who visited the headquarters of The Punch yesterday in Magboro, Ogun State, gave details of how Boko Haram men usually use young girls to carry out their violence activities without them really knowing. Hear him;

"Suicide bombers usually walk in threes. There is the man who leads. The leader will ensure that the small girl who is strapped with the bomb knows the road. The small girl never knows what she is carrying.

"She is simply told to go and deliver a parcel at a market. That leader would have taken her to the market days before to show her the direction of the market. On the day she is to deliver the package, the man will lead and by then she is strapped.

"Then there is another person that tails her from behind who will make sure that she doesn't change her mind or turns in another direction. These bombs are detonated remotely. This is how cowardly these people are. These girls are not indoctrinated. Most of them don't know what they are carrying. Some of them do it for as little as N5, 000 which is given to their parents."

He however maintained that the Federal Government had largely won the war against insurgency.

FG reduces fuel price by 50 kobo per litre

The federal government yesterday reduced the pump price of petrol from N87 to N86.50k per litre with effect from January 1st.

In a statement signed by the‎ executive secretary of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) Farouk Ahmed in Abuja, FG said that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) retail stations will sell at N86 per litre, while retail outlets owned by oil marketers will sell at N86.50k per litre. ‎

The new price follows the approval of the minister of state for petroleum resources Dr. Ibe Kachikwu. The statement adds that the new price will remain till March 31, 2016.

"This is not static; there will be a quarterly review of the pricing template. However, if there is any pricing shift, the minister of state for petroleum resources may call for a review upwards or downward depending on the market condition but for at least the first quarter of 2016 the price will be N86.50/litre while for NNPC it is N86/litre," he said.

Teenage high school graduates audition to become either flight attendants of models in a somewhat outdated Chinese competition.
More than 1,000 young men and women paraded around in their swim wear in the hope of landing their dream job.

The school, in Qingdao, north-east China's Shandong Province, holds the competition every years so budding stewards or catwalk creepers can get a leg up in the industry, reports the People's Daily Online .

It is hosted by the Oriental Beauty modelling agency.

According the company's website, candidates for the event on Monday had to be 5ft 6ins tall - although for those with particularly striking looks this could be dropped by an inch.

The women must be "elegant, slim, have sweet voice and have no scars in the exposed part of their skin," the rules adds.

Becoming a flight attendant in China is said to be a very competitive business.

Successful applicants could be offered a place at an air steward school or model training agency.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Nnamdi Kanu, has according to Punch expressed regret for referring to President Muhammadu Buhari as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile in his radio broadcasts.

Kanu, who was charged along with two others by the Federal Government before a Federal High Court in Abuja on six counts of treason and other offences, said he intended to write a private letter to Pres. Buhari to apologize to him.

He also apologised to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Igbo elders for "some uncomplimentary things" he said about them.
He tendered the apology for his comment against Buhari and others in a statement which he made to the DSS on October 23.

The prosecution, in its summary of the case, alleged that in one of the radio broadcasts by Kanu on August 1, 2015, he expressed his resolve to actualise the Republic of Biafra and "cast aspersions on the person and the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria".

The statement read in part:

"Reference to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile is regrettable and uncalled for and for that, I unreservedly apologise and will be doing so in a private letter to the President.

"Before PMB there was the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. I also said uncomplimentary things about him and Igbo elders as well, which I now recognise should not have happened because it is un-African to be rude or insolent to elders.

"All I was trying to do is to draw attention to the problems afflicting society and something done about them."

Kanu was, however, unapologetic about his demand for a Republic of Biafra and has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his arrest in Lagos on October 14, 2015.

He further said that IPOB's secessionist agenda was informed by the "incessant hardship, lack of holistic development in the socio-economic landscape of Nigeria, lack of youth employment, corruption in high offices and economic regression.
