Drivers Strip DPO Naked Over Death Of Colleague

Angry drivers on Wednesday descended on the Divisional Police Officer of the Aramoko Ekiti division, Mr. Anthony Okpaleye, and stripped him naked over the killing of their colleague, Toyin Philips.

The driver, Mr. Omolafe Aderiye, was killed by suspected robbers in Aramoko Ekiti on September 25, 2015, while travelling to Lagos.

It was learnt that the drivers were angry that the robbery happened a few metres away from a police checkpoint.

An eyewitness, said, "The protesting drivers said the police did not respond swiftly. They stripped the DPO naked and destroyed two police vans."

It was gathered that the state government later summoned a meeting, chaired by the deputy governor, Dr. Kolapo Olusola.

The meeting was attended by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Etop James; Director of the Department of State Services, Mr. Duke Fubara, NURTW members, and other security agencies' heads.

The Deputy Governor said the police would depoly more patrol teams in the Aramoko-Ijero and Aramoko-Igede areas.

He said, "The police will also investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to book. Our government is concerned because when a life is lost, it gives the impression that Ekiti is not safe."

Former Rivers state governor Rotimi Amaechi has denied claims by the Rivers state government that he spent N82 million to host Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka to a dinner in the state when he was in office. The state Commissioner for information had in a statement released on Tuesday alleged that the former governor spent the said amount to organize an 80th birthday dinner party ‎for Soyinka.

In a statement released by his media aide David Iyofor, Amaechi denied the allegation, asking the state governor Nyesom Wike to go to court if he found anything incriminating against him.

He said this recent allegation was an attempt by the state governor to distract the Rivers state indigene from focusing on his election fraud

"Wike must stop these silly distractions. Rivers people are not interested in his lies and witch-hunt. Rather, Rivers people want to know what will happen to their children that he stopped and cancelled the funding of their scholarships abroad. Rivers people want to know why the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), an agency setup by law is no longer functioning under Wike? Why instead of quality education, a standard set by his predecessor, under Wike, grasses and weeds have taken over the beautiful schools built by Amaechi? Rivers people want to know why the standard health facilities and services put in place by the Amaechi administration are rotting away, not this petty rambling. Rivers people want to know why the Wike government does not care about the security of their lives and property, as violence and criminals have taken over. Rivers people want to know why it feels as if there is no government in Rivers State, and this is in spite of the billions of naira that has accrued to the Wike administration and the tens of billions of naira borrowed."

He warned Wike against dragging the names of respected Nigerians who have made the country proud globally and who are internationally known to be honest and forthright, such as Prof Soyinka into his unbridled, unashamed and ill-advised attack of his former boss and benefactor.

Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has reacted to a claim by the Rivers state government that a former governor of the state and now Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi spent N83 million to host him while he, Soyinka, was in the state during the last administration. In statement he titled "Those who flounder in the sewage of corruption," Soyinka lashed out at the incumbent Nyesom Wike-led government whom he described as Wikeleaks. His statement after the cut...

"This morning, I saw only the headlines in one or two print media regarding the 80th Birthday dinner to which I was hosted by the former governor of Rivers State, the Honorable Rotimi Amaechi, now Minister of Transportation. I ignored them. It was not, and remains not my business to probe into the catering and logistical implications of the hundreds of institutions and governments all over the world to whom I acknowledge an immense debt of unsolicited recognition over the years. Since then however, I have learnt of some unsavory statements by the insecure incumbent of the Rivers State government Lodge. These included a loose invitation to anti-crime agencies to investigate the potential crime of being honoured through any occasion. The unprecedented call by this governor is prescient of a warning I recounted in my recent pamphlet publication THE REPUBLIC OF LIARS, and was taken from my address to an anti-corruption global conference that took place in Tunisia two years ago. Those words were: CORRUPTION STRIKES BACK. In this ongoing instance, that expression translates most vividly as "Those who are neck deep in the sewage of corruption ensure that they splatter sewage in all possible and improbable directions. I do however fully support the Wikeleaks call for multi-directional probes. I recommend further that he involve the services of INTERPOL to guarantee its extension to all international organisations and governments to whom I owe uncountable events of recognition – including birthday luncheons, dinners, cultural receptions and events of real, fictitious, or simply opportunistic flavoring – to which I have submitted myself. The descent to this present level of abominable distractions makes one truly despair. It is one that even I did not envisage when I warned – CORRUPTION STRIKES BACK! Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has described statement by the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Dr Austin Tam-George, that the state would demand refund from him (Soyinka) if he collected cash from the N82 million allegedly spent by immediate-past Governor, Rotimi Amaechi on a dinner to honour him as an abominable distraction.
Soyinka, who reacted in a statement on Wednesday night, said it has never been his business to probe into the "catering and logistical implications" of the hundreds of recognitions he had enjoyed worldwide and wondered why the Ameachi gesture in hosting a dinner for him has become an issue.

In the statement he said:

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man, Okwuchukwu Ibekwe, for allegedly selling his five-month-old son to a syndicate in Anambra State for N400,000.

A Punch correspondent learnt that Okwuchukwu, who lives on Shinaba Street, in the Iyana Iba area of Lagos, had some difficulties in his trade and allegedly decided with his wife to raise some money by selling the baby.

Punch Metro gathered that the Ibekwes had contacted one Chinelo, who is still on the run, on December 17, 2015, for the transaction.

It was learnt that Chinelo, who stayed in Ihiala, Anambra State, paid the Ibekwes N400,000 ─ N250,000 to the father and N150,000 to the mother of the baby.

It was gathered that the man, however, had a quarrel with his wife after returning from his trip to Anambra.

It was gathered that when he refused to give the wife her share, she reported the matter to the police.

She then fled the house after making the report. Okwuchukwu was, however, arrested and detained at the Police Gender Unit, Ikeja, while police operatives also arrested Chinelo's husband in Anambra State. The baby and Chinelo had yet to be found.

While being paraded on Wednesday, Okwuchukwu said he collected N400,000 from Chinelo in exchange for his son with the full knowledge of his wife.

He said, "Chinelo was to give me N400,000 for the baby. My wife was the one who suggested that we dispose of the baby to meet our business needs.

"But Chinelo gave me N250,000 for the baby when I went to deliver him to her in Anambra State.

"When I returned, my wife and I quarrelled and she ran away for three days. I did not know that she went to report the matter to the police. She was concerned with her own share of N150,000.

"I sell vehicle spare parts in Ladipo market.

"It was a lawyer who called me that my wife had reported me to the police, and that I should come and see her. When I went there, I was arrested.

"I do not know the whereabouts of my son. I did not know Chinelo would run away with my child."

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspect, said the case was undergoing "intense investigation."
